MS 150 |
|
| |
One of the many great things about working here at Left Hand Brewing Company is that we believe in giving back to the communities where we work, live and play. Part of that core belief system is the fact that we voluntarily contribute the equivalent of 1% of our annual net revenues to charitable organizations nationwide. And it doesn't stop at the company level either - it permeates itself to each individual employee.
This July 7-8, two of our employees, Chris Lennert and Mic Gibb, will be joining over 2,800 cyclists in the
2007 Colorado MS 150 Bike Tour and give those living with Multiple Sclerosis 2.5 million reasons to hope, endure and fight for a cure. Last year the ride raised over $2 million in the fight against MS and this year they are striving to raise a record $2.5 million.
The 150 mile, 2-day ride starts and ends in Broomfield, CO, with an overnight in Fort Collins, CO. Both Chris and Mic are training now, and would love to have your support in this incredible event.

Brewer's Corner - Beer Matters |
|
| |
Hi everybody and thanks for checkin' in with us here at the brewery, where things are just going peachy. This is a very busy time of year for us. It's one of those things where everything seems to come together at the same time and you have to really buckle down and focus. We have lots of projects going on and I'll just appraise you of the ones I can remember.
We are aggressively hitting our Oktoberfest production now. We need to make 500 bbls of it by July 1. This is no small task. I suppose the hardest working members of our team at this point are all of our lager yeast cells, slowly and methodically fermenting the wort that will bring so much pleasure in a couple of months. Our first batch was brewed on May 8th and last will be July 2nd. It takes eight weeks before this beer is ready for packaging. Here's some fun numbers to ponder. We have 1474 bbls of tank space in our brewery. I mean that is every functional tank we have! On July 2 Oktoberfest will occupy 34% of it. The 500 bbl we make this year is the equivalent of 4.4% of last year's total production.
Our hop field is really starting to take off. The plants are looking good and of course the contest to see which plant hits the wire first is underway. I wonder who will win the pot this year? Of course there is a lot of work that needs to be done in field during the springtime. Ro Guenzel and myself have spent many hours out there. We've been stringing training twine, trimming and selecting the vines we'll let grow, weeding and making irrigation repairs. This year we cut the plants back for the first month after they broke ground in an attempt to delay the harvest as much as possible. Our Warrior IPA uses wet Warrior hops as well as anything usable we can get from our plot. We are trying to make it so our hops are ready closer to the time the Warrior is harvested. I'll let you know how this approach works when we get closer to harvesting.
We recently purchased a new semi- automatic corker and wirehood machine for packaging the Big Mo' Series. This should improve our efficiency, consistency, and quality of our packaging. The packaging crew is very excited to bust this out for our release of Rye Bock. It should also have a positive effect on prompt delivery because we will be able to do more at one time, instead of over the course of several packaging events.
Our next release after Rye Bock in the Big Mo' package is the Goosinator Dopplebock. The test batches came out great and the addition of smoked malt in this year's recipe has a great impact on flavor. Look for it in September.
Our ongoing investment in process improvements continues. The quotes for a new brewhouse as well as packaging automation improvements are rolling in. There are some very exciting days ahead for us here.
Anyway, that's it for me. I'll sign off saying I hope everyone has a great start of summer and we'll check in with you next month. Ciao!
